Service Description
3-week course: Sat, Oct 24 - Nov 7, 1:30pm - 3:30pm Beginner-Advanced Ages 18+ Relief printmaking is the art of carving a design into a block to create a reusable printing surface, much like a large stamp, that can be inked to produce multiple original prints. Join a friendly, creative community in this 3-session course, open to all experience levels, from first-time makers to seasoned artists. You'll learn to carve designs into basswood or soft, eraser-like carving blocks that make the process gentler on your hands and wrists while allowing you to achieve satisfying results more quickly. Each session includes guided, hands-on instruction in image transfer, carving, and printing, with opportunities to share ideas and encourage one another's creative progress. You'll learn to work with hand gouges, explore positive and negative space, and practice mirror-image thinking. You'll build confidence, develop your own visual voice, and learn printmaking techniques from a professional local artist. You'll leave with original prints and practical skills you can continue using independently. Inspired by the Creative Aging model, this course fosters social connection and supports mental, emotional, and physical well-being through creativity. While all adults are welcome, the class especially encourages adults 55+ to continue learning, creating, & thriving. Week 1: Overview and intro to relief printmaking; thinking about a design Week 2: Preparing the design; carving the first design Week 3: Printing, with optional painting of the paper background; DIY relief prints All supplies will be provided. Optional to bring: 6" x 8" images or photos for inspiration Water/snacks Disclaimers: This class involves detailed carving/sustained hand use/multi-step processes/working with sharp tools; it is best suited for individuals who are comfortable with fine-motor tasks and extended focus. Unlike a woodblock printmaking course, we will use softer carving blocks that are gentler on hands & wrists. About your instructor: Gretchen Weitemier is a Boise native who holds a B.A. in Studio Art from Whitman College and a Master’s in Occupational Therapy from Pacific University. Her work and teaching are guided by the neuroscience of creative “flow” and mindful art-making. Gretchen has taught Relief (Woodblock) Printmaking at Catalyst Arts Collaborative since 2022 and is an active member of the Treasure Valley Artists Alliance, exhibiting work locally and across the U.S.
