Service Description

1-day class: Saturday, June 22, 9:00am - 5:00pm Ages 18+ Learn how to hook your own heirloom! Rug hooking is an art form that began in ancient Egypt and has occupied a large space in American history with rugs of the 1930’s now selling at auction for thousands of dollars. This is not the latch hooking that was popular in the 1970’s with its shaggy pile. Rather, it has a looped pile created by pulling strips of cut wool fabric through a backing material. Learn how to create one of these beautiful rugs by attending this class and starting on a small (pillow size) project. Your instructor will be Susan Elcox, a 35-year hooking veteran, Treasurer of Treasure Valley Rug Hookers, and a McGown-Certified Rug Hooking Teacher. You may choose to bring your own project, or specify a kit of your choice be made for you by contacting the instructor in advance (~6wks notice please). Tuition does not include the price of a rug kit, which can range in price from ~$60-$120. Kits include a design on backing material (i.e. a pattern) and all the hand-dyed wools to complete the project. Scissors, hooks, burling irons, and magnets will also be available for purchase in class. The first hour (9-10am) of this workshop will be dedicated to rug hooking fundamentals, meaning that those with prior experience do not need to show up at the Cat Classroom until 10am. A pizza lunch will be provided, and is included in the cost of tuition. You are welcome to bring your own lunch if you prefer. Beginners to this medium should bring: - A large (10-14”) embroidery hoop - Scissors If you have some experience, you may also want to bring: - Hooks - Scissors - Frames - Cutters Optional items to bring: - Layered clothing, as the temperature may fluctuate in the building - Bottled water/beverage with lid - Crafting lamp (if you have a tough time seeing up close) Additionally, Susan will provide an optional, 2-hour-long dye seminar on 6/23, from 2-4pm, at Susan's personal dye kitchen, located at 12725 N 12th Ave., Boise, ID 83714 (in Hidden Springs). Cost for this optional follow-up seminar is $20, which will be paid directly to your instructor. Scholarships for this and all of our other classes are available for those who otherwise would not be able to attend art classes.
