Service Description

These two unique, introductory plein air painting sessions are available through a partnership with Catalyst Arts Collaborative and Bogus Basin! 1-day workshops. Upcoming workshop dates: - Tue, July 15, 9:00am - 12:00pm - Tue, July 22, 9:00am - 12:00pm Ages 12+ Students will create a plein air painting on-site, working directly from life in an outdoor setting. In this introductory class, students will learn to observe how natural light and shadow interact on objects and in the landscape, how to select a strong composition, and how to simplify complex scenes for clarity and impact. We’ll explore how to “paint what you see” rather than what you think you know, with special attention given to value relationships and atmospheric perspective. This class is great for artists new to plein air painting or those looking to strengthen their foundational skills. All experience and skill levels are welcome! Recommended to bring: - Standing easel - Canvas, board, or mixed media paper - Paint of choice, acrylic or oil (white, and a warm and cool red, blue, and yellow; no black needed) - If oil, a container of medium - If acrylic, a container with water - Brushes - Any palette, paper plate, or paper palette - Pallet knife - Paper towels - Pencil/ruler - Garbage bags/plastic bags - Spray bottles with water if using acrylic (Standing easels & some other materials may be available for participants who need them. Please inquire in advance!) Optional to bring: - Viewfinder - Gloves - Wet wipes - Apron - Umbrella/hat/sunscreen - Positive attitude! About your instructor: Kayla Hanson is an Idaho-born artist and educator who works primarily in oil paint. Deeply inspired by the natural world, she often paints outdoors to capture light, color, and connection to place. She holds a BFA in painting from Boise State and has exhibited her work in group and solo shows. Kayla is a member of the Plein Air Painters of Idaho, has studied with artist Robert Moore, and enjoys helping others grow through art and observation. Scholarships for this and all of our other classes are available for those who otherwise would not be able to attend art classes, thanks to generous donations to our Art Start Fund. If you would like to make classes available to others, see our sponsorships page to contribute a monthly or one-time donation. Thank you for supporting (y)our commUNITY!
