Service Description

Individual, 1-day workshop: Saturday, July 25, 10:30am - 12:30pm Ages 5-14 In this workshop, the children will explore the world of Idaho’s native birds while crafting their own binoculars using recycled toilet paper rolls! Each child will design and decorate their binoculars, encouraging creativity, personalization, and a sense of ownership in their learning tools. While the children create their binoculars, we will talk about the different kinds of birds that live here in Idaho! Just a small introduction to the world of wildlife all around them. To extend their learning, children will become expert birders themselves. Using a guided worksheet, they will invent their own unique bird species, drawing out not only their bird, but its habitat, the food it eats, and something special their bird can do. This activity blends art, science, and imaginative thinking! By the end of the workshop, children will have: - Created their own binoculars from recycled materials - Learned about native Idaho birds - Designed and described an original bird species All materials will be provided by Catalyst or your instructor. Optional to bring: - Toilet paper/paper towel rolls - Any specific craft supplies they might be partial to About your instructors: - Hannah is a mostly self-taught artist whose work is rooted in curiosity, fun, and a love for imaginative expression! A background in early childhood education and additional experience through college-level art courses have helped grow her appreciation for childlike creativity. She is most at home working with oil paints, but enjoys diving into crafting, mixed media, and other hands-on projects. - Josefine Carver is a mixed media Illustrator from New York, now living in Idaho. Using illustrations to show scenes of daily life, nature, and complex feelings, all based on personal experiences and appreciation. With a unique cartoon art style inspired by many animated TV shows from the 2010s. She loves anything and everything relating to art, and has inspired and taught many around her to keep going and how to get better. - Through their involvement with The Cat, Hannah and Josie have been given the opportunity to nurture their art into something more sustainable, with room to grow as artists!
