Service Description

4-session course: Biweekly Saturdays, July 13 - August 24, 4:00pm - 6:00pm Ages 18+ (15+ welcome with an adult) Over a series of four classes, beginner and intermediate students will start creating a visual journal, beginning with simple backgrounds, then moving to creating elements with collage, ephemera, repurposed/recycled materials, paint and other mediums. We will also explore adding pockets, doors and other extensions to our journals! Afterwards, we will pull all of these elements together into creative expressions of visual journaling by adding words and other meaningful symbols. We'll also discuss different formats and bindings for journaling, including accordion fold, binder rings, pre-bound and unbound structures, and finding images from recycled and/or copyright-free sources. Your facilitator for this course, Dr. Laura Burlingame-Lee is an artist and licensed psychologist. Her interests include collage, art/visual journaling, SoulCollage®, expressive writing and traditional journaling, art therapy, and book arts, and she has been practicing journaling for 20 years. Optional items to bring with you: - A blank journal or a book to repurpose as a journal - Apron/clothes suitable for painting - Any collage materials (ephemera, washi tape, keepsakes, etc.) and/or art materials that you may want to use - Layered clothing, as the temperatures may fluctuate in our large building - Water/beverage with lid Scholarships for this and all of our other classes are available for those who otherwise would not be able to attend art classes, thanks to generous donations to our Art Start Fund.
