Service Description

5-day course: Monday - Friday, July 13 - July 17, 9:00am - 2:00pm (with a 30-minute lunch break each day) Ages 15-17 (beginner-intermediate level) One of the biggest lessons your instructor, Damon, has learned is that strong artwork comes from consistency. Every character, object, background and imperfection should feel intentional. In this camp, students will learn how to build that consistency while developing their own unique style. We’ll also focus on confidence. Students will learn how to simplify, stay focused, and create artwork that is clear and expressive. Inspiration will come from styles that mix anime, graffiti, realism, and popular comics. Throughout the camp, students will build a foundation in character design by learning features like eyes, noses, mouths, hair, hands, and overall expression. They will learn essential skills to create their own comics. They will learn how to storyboard and create their own layouts ready for print. Through daily drawing exercises, guided practice, and original character projects, they’ll refine sketches into finished artwork and complete a polished final piece by the end of camp. Their pages will be printed in a one shot anthology issue. Course curriculum: Day 1: Daily Exercise: Blind Contouring Drawing character feature basics Draw concept sketch. Transfer to board. Draw character on board. Day 2: World/character creation Panel layout Create story boards Day 3-4: Create pages Day 5: Finish up Print ready layout All materials will be provided by Catalyst or your instructor. Optional to bring: - Scratch paper, special pens, coloring supplies, reference materials (at own risk) About your instructor: Damon Bradshaw is a versatile artist traversing many artistic mediums. Whether it’s ink to skin, paint on the walls of buildings, comic books, promotional material and digital art, his art continues to stamp any avenue he can infiltrate. His art, design and layout have been used worldwide for an independent production company Portnow Intertainment Group otherwise known as PIG Records. He’s a professionally trained tattooer and was an artist for Nightcrew Games on their Cyberpunk 2077 project. He’s taught anime drawing classes at cons and continues to share his passion for art through other public interaction events for JUMP Boise.
