Service Description

4-week course: Sundays, April 7 - April 28, 5:30pm - 7:00pm Ages 16+ This beginner-friendly linoleum relief printing course begins by giving you an overview of the history of relief printmaking, and of contemporary artists working within the medium. After discussing the basics of composition, you'll spend time developing a drawing or idea, and learn different ways to represent that image by cutting designs into linoleum. This medium is also called "linocut!" Each student will leave the class with an understanding of--and experience in--carving and "editioning" (i.e. using your linoleum carving and ink to produce one or more relief prints) a linoleum print; their linoleum carving; and their print(s)! Please bring the following with you: - Sketchbook/sketch paper and writing utensils of your choice All other supplies are included! Optional: - Layered clothing, as the temperatures may fluctuate in our building - Water/beverage with lid Willow Wells is a talented and thoughtful artist from New England who infuses traditional mediums like oil painting and printmaking with beautiful, unexpected, and surreal themes. Willow earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of South Florida. She was also Surel’s Place’s October/November 2023 Artist-in-Residence, and will be starting another artist residency this spring! In her art, Willow infuses traditional mediums like oil painting and printmaking with beautiful, unexpected themes of metamorphosis between humans and nature, resulting in a truly unique brand of surrealism. (Check out the photos down below to see some examples!) Scholarships for this and all of our other classes are available for those who otherwise would not be able to attend art classes, thanks to generous donations to our Art Start Fund. If you would like to make classes available to others, see our sponsorships page to contribute a monthly or one-time donation. Thank you for supporting (y)our commUNITY! *This class is included in our Teacher Share program, which allows our teachers to expand their knowledge and skills by learning from one another at no cost.
